History of the brand
William J. Riley was one of many English immigrants living in Boston, Massachusetts in 1906. He had trained as a shoemaker in his homeland and wanted to help people with foot problems in America. The idea came to him in his garden. Watching his chickens, he was amazed at how easily they could keep their balance with three toes. This is how he is said to have come up with the idea of naming his new shoe „New Balance“. In the middle of the economic crisis, the young entrepreneur Arthur Hall joined them and they moved the company to Cambridge, Massachusetts. They produced their shoes specifically for athletes in baseball, basketball, tennis, boxing and running. In the 1950s Hall's daughter took over the company and organised one of the first charity drives. The money raised went to the American Red Cross. This was just the beginning of the ever popular New Balance charity events. The year 1961 went down in New Balance sneaker history. It was the year when the Teackster was the most worn shoe in the American sports scene and colleges. In the mid-70s, Hall's daughter sold the company to a young man, Jim Davis, for $100,000. The company consisted of 6 employees who made 30 shoes a day. In the early 80s the first international sales office opened in London and the first European factory in Great Britain. By its 100th anniversary in 2006, New Balance had over 2,800 employees on all continents. The brand is still one of the four largest sports brands in the world.
