The story of The North Face began not with a wooden house in Alaska, but with a sunny beach in San Francisco. The Tompkins opened a small shop here in 1966, specialising in outdoor sports and mountaineering.

Two years later, during this period, the shop moved to Berkeley and delivered the first batch of its own products under the name "The North Face".
