...to find a diamond in the rough, you have to dig a little deeper. These hidden gems, which you may have overlooked at first glance, turn up in the most unpredictable places and can inspire for years to come.

Lodown's new issue GEMS spotlights collector's gems, some emerging artists and sacred nuggets from the depths of their archive. Highlights of the issue include:

• LDWN Archive: it was time to once again dive deep into the archive to bring almost forgotten treasures back to light.
• Sean Hamilton: As the pandemic reached its peak, Hamilton moved into a trailer on his parents' property in rural Idaho, set up a studio and devoted himself entirely to improving his painting technique.
• Jamie Wdziekonski: The Melbourne-based photographer divides his time between documenting the hottest bands the indie circuit has to offer on this planet and capturing the protest culture on the streets of Down Under.
• Willy Spiller: When Swiss photographer Willy Spiller newly arrived in New York City in the spring of 1977, the city's public transport presented itself as something completely different: for him, the atmosphere resembled the forecourt of hell. It was absolutely terrifying. Definitely electrifying. And definitely not comparable to anything he had ever experienced in his home country. So he began taking his camera into the underground for eight years, capturing the fascinating microcosm and the associated clash of high and low culture in around 2,000 images.
• In addition, there are more elaborate features and visual strokes of genius by, among others: Sebastian Haslauer, Mona Sardari, Bernhard Moosbauer, Barbara Helmer, Ali Boulala, Peter Lagast and many others.
