History of the brand

Already in the early 50s ONITSUKA TIGER makes a name for itself on the US market. One of the first U.S. dealers who distributes the shoes is Phil Knight. He had previously founded the company Blue Ribbon Sports, which is now known as Nike. TIGER gained great attention and success when the winner of the Boston Marathon wore TIGER running shoes. Shoe soles with an absorbent function to gain more ground contact was an absolute novelty in the running shoe fashion world and thus ensured the breakthrough of the company. In the next decades followed again and again technical innovations by the company TIGER in the running shoe sector. In 1970, it is the most popular running shoe brand in the USA. Its popularity was such that two years later, at the Olympic Games in Munich, 80% of the volleyball players wore TIGER shoes. At the end of the 70s, in 1977, "ONITSUKA TIGER" merged with several other companies to form Asics. But the philosophy of Kihachiro Onitsuka lives on in the Asics shoes, because the name is the abbreviation for "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano - „In a healthy body dwells a healthy mind!“.

The company Asics provides since its founding day again and again for innovations and sensational developments that shape and change the shoe industry sustainable. Time and again, the company has set new standards and benchmarks for the perfectly fitting running shoe. The suction-cup shoes represented a true world first in the 1950s. In the years that followed, Asics established a research laboratory in Kobe devoted exclusively to the analysis of athletic footwear. In 1994, the company developed a shoe that still defines the running shoe today: the GEL-KAYANO.
