The iconic sneaker, originally launched in the late 90s, has quickly become a must-have for motorsport fans and sneaker lovers. Now it's back and ready to take over more than just the streets of fashion metropolises.
The origin of the Speedcat lies in Formula 1, when Puma designed a silhouette in the 1980s with the motorsport model that was tailored precisely to the requirements of Formula 1 drivers. With the Speedcat, the brand from Herzogenaurach then developed a shoe in 1999 that was based on the fireproof shoes of Formula 1 drivers - the Speedcat. At the time, Formula 1 was increasingly being broadcasted on TV during prime time, which meant that more people were engaging with the sport. Furthermore, the sport produced famous athletes and after only the hardcore Formula 1 fans were interested in shoes inspired by their favourite drivers' footwear, a trend of its own developed and such silhouettes were increasingly sought after by the public.
Attracted by the innovative design of racing shoes, it was the eye-catching look of the Speedcat with its monochromatic look, broken up by the Puma logo and the sole that is pulled up to the heel, that aroused the interest of consumers. Added to this was the association with motorsport culture, supported by celebrity wearers who established the shoe as a cool sneaker.
With the fashion of the 2000s dominating once again and motorsport having regained prominence in recent months, now is exactly the time for the Speedcat to return. Stars such as Emily Ratajkowski, ASAP Rocky and many more have already approved the comeback. The shoe has often been seen on Ratajkowski's feet, as well as at ASAP Rocky's first fashion show in Paris.
