The brand "Asics" was founded in 1949 in Kobe, a Japanese city, under the name "Onitsuka Tiger". Since then, the Japanese sporting goods manufacturer has grown steadily and now has a turnover of around 3.9 billion euros. Asics employs around 7300 people. Because of the company's Japanese roots, there is one main location in Japan. Fourteen other Japanese companies and nine foreign subsidiaries make up the brand. Today, Asics ranks fifth in the international sports footwear market. The German headquarters is located in Neuss. The annual turnover in Germany is around 80 million euros. The headquarters of the Japanese giant's research and development centre is also located in Japan. In 1949, Onitsuka launched its first basketball shoe, but then as now, the main focus is on running shoes. In 1977, Onitsuka joined forces with GTO Sports Nets & Sportswear.
